Disaster Services is a congressionally mandated responsibility of the Red Cross. Disaster services focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and mental health services to address basic human needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is to provide assistance to enable victims to resume their normal daily lives. Seven Disaster Action Teams (DAT) serve as first responders to disasters in Rutherford, Cannon and Bedford Counties. The Heart of Tennessee Chapter assisted 348 people last year, after their homes were damaged or destroyed by fires. |
